James Stretz is a Senior Vice President at George K. Baum & Company. Mr. Stretz has more than 30 years of experience working in the housing finance industry as a commercial banker, developer, nonprofit executive, state HFA director, low income housing tax credit investor and investment banker. He is currently part of 17 states' HFA banking teams in various capacities from program advisor to senior manager, and has been involved with billions of dollars of affordable multifamily and single family housing financings. Mr. Stretz's depth of knowledge of financial markets is complemented by his hands-on experience in running both market rate and MRB programs. His multifamily experience includes senior, special needs and family housing. Mr. Stretz currently serves as the vice chairman of the board of Cinnaire (formerly Great Lakes Capital), a not-for-profit LIHTC syndicator and CDFI, and Chairs Housing Colorado, an affordable housing advocacy organization.
Prior to joining GKB, Mr. Stretz served as Executive Director of New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority for 14 years and then as President and CEO of the Arizona Family Housing Fund. His other career positions include CEO positions in commercial banking, and telecommunications as well as serving as a State Banking Commissioner. Mr. Stretz is a former board member and treasurer of the National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) and a past member of the Fannie Mae National Housing Impact Advisory Council. He also served multiple terms on the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas's Affordable Housing advisory committee. He is one of nine recipients of the NCSHA Leadership Award and was granted the National Social Compact Award given by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Stretz holds an MBA from the Anderson School of Management and a BS in Economics from Colorado State University.
